It’s quickly heating up in San Antonio. And the best way to survive the South Texas summer is in a pool. I’ve been looking into pool options for my own kids and thought I’d just write it all down for my fellow San Antonio families. So if you’re looking for options for swimming pools in San Antonio this summer, keep reading! This list just kept growing as I came across more and more options, so I decided to make separate posts for San Antonio Splash Pads and San Antonio Waterparks.
I’m combining a lot in this round-up: public pools, membership pools, and indoor pools. San Antonio is a large city so I certainly can’t list every single option, but this is a pretty thorough start if you’re looking for a place to cool off this summer.
We have a lot of great FREE public swimming pools in San Antonio through the Parks and Rec department. The Aquatics Division operates 24 outdoor pools, 1 indoor pool Natatorium, and offers instructional programs such as lifeguard and water safety training, swim lessons for youth and adults, open swim, lap swim, water-based fitness classes, and seasonal youth camps.
The regular pool season starts on June 17th, but some of the pools will open on weekends from 1-7pm starting May 13th. And did I mention that our public pools are free?! I’m not going to list all 24 outdoor pools here, but will highlight a few popular ones. You can find a whole list, maps, and addresses at the Parks and Rec webpage. The pools opening for pre-season are: Concepcion, Cuellar, Dellview, Elmendorf, Fairchild, Garza, Heritage, Lady Bird Johnson, Southside Lions, Spring Time and Woodlawn.
San Pedro Springs Park at 2200 N. Flores is San Antonio’s oldest designated park and second oldest park in the US. Boston Common (1630) is the only public park in America that is older. How cool is that? Their massive swimming pool was built in 1922 and was at one time fed by natural springs.
Another of the largest and oldest of San Antonio’s public pools is the Woodlawn Lake Park Pool. This is one of the 4 public pools that has slides, and also offers shade canopies along one side. It also has a separate children’s pool, and an adjacent park with a playground and walking trails.
This pool on the NE side at 10700 Nacogdoches Rd is a good-sized pool with some zero entry spots. I love entrances like this for my littles kids! There’s also a free skate park, dog park, sports fields and courts and a hiking trail.
Located on the south side of San Antonio at 3100 Hiawatha, this community pool offers a large swimming area, water slides, and a separate children’s pool. The park surrounding the pool also features sports fields, picnic areas, and a playground.
This park pool offers a lap pool for fitness enthusiasts and a leisure pool for recreational swimming, making it suitable for various preferences. There’s also a playground, walking trail, fitness stations and ball fields at the park.
If you’re looking for pools that are a bit more exclusive than the city’s free public pools, you’ve got options. Some of these are neighborhood pools – and I’m sure there are many more of those, but here’s a decent start.
This members-only pool in Alamo Heights offers a variety of programs and special events including swimming lessons, an Olympic size swimming pool with continuous lap lanes, a separate diving pool with a 10ft slide, a shaded kiddie pool, snack bar, volleyball area, playscape, birthday parties, and plenty of picnic tables. Single passes start at $395 and family passes are $650.
This pool is located on the NW side near Shavano park. The Oak Meadow swim club is a member-owned, non-profit club offering swimming, tennis, recreational and social activities for residents of the Oak Meadow subdivision and non-resident members. The pool is 25 meters with a 9 foot diving well. There is a separate baby pool for children under 6 years old. There are two full size tennis courts for year round tennis. The swimming pool is open during the summer. Family memberships are $269.
Located in the Castle Hills area, just north of 410, this membership is for pool and tennis access. Dues for one person are $225 and a family is $400. The club has a 6-lane L-shaped pool with a diving well, an adult pool and kiddie pool, shaded picnic areas and grills, tennis courts and a sand volleyball court.
Another Castle Hills neighborhood pool open to non-residents. A family membership is $200.
This club on the NW side off swimming lessons and a summer pool membership. They have an Olympic size pool and a kiddie pool. Family memberships cost $385 plus a one-time initiation fee. Next to the pool is a play area, grills, sports courts, and membership includes use of the tennis courts.
Looking for some indoor pools in San Antonio that you can visit year-round? We have a few great options there too.
The San Antonio Natatorium at 1430 W. Cesar Chavez is an Olympic-sized indoor pool complex. It offers both open and lap swim options at different hours, so be sure to check their site before you go. They also offer water aerobics classes and swim lessons, and they also host swim meets. While it is also managed by SA Parks and Recreation, it does have a small entrance fee. Kids 17 and under get in for $2 and adults are $4.
Another popular option for indoor pools you can access year-round is the YMCA. We have a lot of YMCA locations with pools around San Antonio. They offer lessons for kids and adults and a variety of swim teams and clubs.
Another place to find indoor pools year-round is at many gyms and health clubs. Many will only offer adult lap swimming, but some also offer kids swim lessons.
Phew, that is a pretty extensive round-up of swimming pools in San Antonio. I’ve also gathered info on splash pads and waterparks if you want to learn more about those too!
You know what else is a great summer activity? Family pictures! If you want them outside, then no…summer is not good. But my passion is capturing families together in their homes. In the air conditioning. 🙂 And summer is the perfect time for that, with it’s longer days and no school. Reach out if you want to talk more about documenting the everyday beauty of your life right now.
